In 1979, in its third session in Torremolinos, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) General Assembly established the World Tourism Day. Since then, this day has been celebrated on 27 September in different countries and holiday travel destinations every year. It is not surprising that, being the place where this special day was instituted, the Costa del Sol is one of the regions where it is most enthusiastically celebrated.
The main purpose of World Tourism Day is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values. To this end, the Department for Tourism at the Málaga City Council has prepared a programme of activities, mainly guided tours and open-door meetings at the most important museums and tourist sites in town.
