If we still find it difficult to be different and live against social conventions, imagine what it must have been like five centuries ago. That was the world in which Lope de Vega wrote 'The Dog in the Manger' ('El perro del hortelano'), one of his most celebrated plays, telling the ruses of Diana, the Countess of Belflor, to catch Teodoro, her secretary, when she realises she's in love with him after learning that he's fooling around with one of her maids.
